Come to InfoComm
By Chris Chinnock
Sr. Editor and Analyst, Insight Media
Let me shift gears a bit today and make a suggestion - think about coming to InfoComm, Projection Summit, 3D Comm or any of the other related events surrounding this show. There is a lot to see, learn and experience at this event, so let me provide some high level info to whet your appetite.
We have been working with the InfoComm organization for 10 years now (great organization, by the way). In that time, we have seen this event grow rapidly through consolidation with other events, many partnerships and outreach programs to expand their reach and offer more information, education and products to attendees. Here are some stats:
-
22 percent of attendees are technical/engineering / 71 percent are management/advisor
-
Nearly 15,500 systems integrators, dealers, independent reps, rental and staging professionals, design consultants, presentation and video production professonals attend InfoComm each year
-
7,000 buyers and end users attend InfoComm; 18 percent of buyers come from 100+ countries outside of the United States
InfoComm is a ProAV show, but ProAV equipment spans so many industries. Many new products covering a wide range of technologies are debuted at this event.
If you want to dig deeper into specific technology, market or application areas, there is the chance to do that as well. For example, Projection Summit is the only show with an exclusive focus on this technology. Projection technology is far from dead. In fact, it is growing nicely as a market segment. To create this year’s program, we listed what we and other’s thought were the top trends and opportunities for projection and came up with the following:
-
Auto-stereoscopic 3D (AS-3D) projection solutions
-
AV and Home Theater Projection
-
Projection Components & Modules
-
Low-power Green Lasers
-
Pico/micro Projector Opportunities
-
Projection in Education
-
Green AV
-
Laser-based Digital Cinema and Large Venue
For those of you who have attended Projection Summit in the past, you know we take good care of you for 2 days with food, beverages and exhibitions. I always learn a lot at Projection Summit.
Now if education in other areas is on your to do list, we can suggest 3D Comm for those with an interest in the 3D area. 3D COMM runs during InfoComm and provides classroom style education in 90-minute sessions in two tracks. We have scheduled 24 courses (we will be teaching a lot of them) with some repeating to fit people’s busy schedules. There are courses on:
-
3D Content creation
* Introduction to stereo vision and 3D human factors, AS-3D content creation for Digital Signage; Content creation for stereoscopic displays, New 3D workflows
-
3D Displays
* Intro to 3D displays, Passive glasses 3D displays, Advanced AS-3D displays, Active glasses 3D displays, 3D polarization modulation, Zone-based AS-3D displays, Multi-window, blended 3D display solutions
-
3D Systems Integration
* AS-3D Digital Signage, Stereoscopic systems integration, AS-3D case studies
-
3D Applications and Markets
* 3D Applications - Where, What and Why, 3D Viz/Sim, AS-3D market opportunities
On the exhibit floor, there is a 3D pavilion, a 3D theater and other 3D demos in vendor’s booths.
InfoComm offers much more training, special conferences and events that are sure to have something for just about anyone with an interest in this industry. Events run from June 11-17 in Orlando, Florida, so maybe you should considering coming.

Tablets Aren't Just For Clients Anymore
By Lee Distad
rAVe Columnist
It’s hard to think of an emergent category that has so quickly embedded itself in almost every channel of the CE biz as tablets. While the iPad is almost synonymous with the category, it’s not alone. Users of Android-based tablets will undoubtedly want the same level of functionality as iPad users, and it won’t be long before you see manufacturers respond as they have with the iPad to meet this demand.
While much of the focus in the media has been on the function of tablets as an end-user device the uptake among integrators and AV pros for their own purposes has been notable. Obviously salespeople and designers are now carrying around their own iPads as demo devices to show clients how it can work as an automation interface, but its utility as an actual tool on the job is gaining attention.
There’s now an enormous assortment of Apps to assist the AV pro in their job. Many of them replace a number of meters and measuring tools, which frees up space and weight in a technician’s toolbox. SPL meters, tone generators, bandwidth testers, and light meters are among the general tools that make a tablet even more indispensible.
Drilling down, there are even more job-specific Apps. HD Sleuth from AudioControl, available for iPhone/iPad and Android is a troubleshooting toolkit for solving HDMI connectivity issues. Given how much squawking has gone on from integrators, any tools to help with HDMI installations is likely a welcome option.
For sound techs, Smaart Tools is a measurement App for the iPad that’s been developed by Studio Six Digital and Rational Acoustics. It features an RTA Bar graph, RTA Line graph, RTA Bar & FFT graph as well as Spectrograph. On the iPad, split graph mode is available, so users can put any two graphs on the screen at the same time. Techs can choose from the iPad’s built in microphone or an external accessory mic that will be available shortly.
Yamaha’s StageMix App for the iPad allows remote control of M7CL mixer functions. Sound techs can leave the booth, stand at the performer’s locations and adjust the wedges based on what they’re hearing, saving time and effort.
When dealing with clients, tablets aren’t just demo tools to show how automation works. Vendor specific Apps are appearing that allow salespeople and designers to create in the field. Ad Notam’s App allows designers to specify their custom-built mirror TVs to requirements of commercial and residential clients.
There’s more of course, and I’m still on the hunt to discover new Apps. Clearly the tablet/work App combination is having as profound an effect on the AV Pro and installer side as it is on the end-user side. If you’re anything like me you’re already squirreling away useful Apps on your phone and tablet the same way you “stock up” on actual tools in the hope that you’ll need them someday soon.

InfoComm Best Practices Compliance Project
By Randal A. Lemke, Ph.D.
Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International
Recently I have been thinking and writing about the AV and IT industries as they both approach an integrated communications environment. The demand for our product and services is present, but we must transform our industry to one that is quality-focused and works from industry standards and best practices, or we will jeopardize our current and future business.
That future can be characterized as one of increased business opportunities that require us to adapt to new customer demands. InfoComm's market research studies show a consistent growth in the size of the market and we are realizing more income from service than sales. InfoComm's standards and best practices all focus on the service side of the business -- how we design and install systems. Additionally, organizations are also deploying our technology worldwide and are using it as a primary communication tool -- AV has gone mainstream. Finally, because organizations are relying more on our technology, they are demanding interoperability and consistency between sites. With IT companies entering our industry, they bring with them a shared expectation their customers have — that our systems are reliable and have an uptime record that mirrors IT.
With those assumptions, InfoComm's Board of Directors has identified a need to assist its members and the industry to adopt and apply industry best practices to the design and installation of information communications technology. It has heard from manufacturers that the application of industry best practices vs. company best practices is needed in order to produce reliable and replicable systems. It has also heard from clients that uniformity in practice is needed, especially in enterprise applications. Finally, it has heard from the designers and installers that without the ability to produce, troubleshoot, and maintain reliable systems, companies suffer from inefficiency and lowered profitability.
Fortunately, this all comes at a time when InfoComm has produced the necessary building blocks to help the industry meet this need. Over the last five years InfoComm has received the ANSI/ISO 17024 accreditation for its CTS®, CTS®-D and CTS®-I, and it also has become an ANSI Standards Developing Organization. Traditionally our Education Department and the Professional Education and Training Committee have produced best practices in our curricula and we also now have within the Department of Standards and Best Practices a full and complementary effort to produce industry best practices. This latter group has worked on BIM, Green AV, STEPâ„ , and Integrated Building Technologies, among other topics of interest. This is all to say we have, and are developing, the intellectual property the industry needs to emerge from a craft of individual practitioners to an industry based upon the collective knowledge of the best and brightest that work within it.
With the accumulated best practices and standards, the InfoComm Board and the Certification Committee are in the process of developing a program so that project owners can recognize those companies that build "industry best practice compliant systems." InfoComm has, in the last 15 years, developed a body of knowledge and best practices applicable to this project that can serve as the basis of this project. So far it has conveyed these to the industry through on-line and classroom instruction, publications, and the development of ANSI standards. These multiple sources compose for companies a full list of best practices, but the current format is not one that is easy to use as it takes cross-referencing and use of multiple documents to bring the information to bear on a project.
The InfoComm Best Practices Compliance Project will be composed of:
--An electronic document of best practices, absent the instructional and theoretical materials needed for other purposes. The best practices would be defined and would contain evaluation criteria to guide compliance with the best practices.
--The development and operation of a "Design and Installation Best Practices Administrator" (DIBPA) certification program to indicate individuals within system integration companies, design consultancies, or third party professionals who know and can evaluate successful application of InfoComm Best Practices. While the Certification Committee has work to do on the criteria, initial ideas are that to qualify, a DIBPA would:
-
Be currently accredited as an InfoComm CTS-D or CTS-I.
-
Be able to demonstrate knowledge of InfoComm Design and Installation Best Practices.
-
Demonstrate an ability to apply best practices criteria in order to certify projects as "InfoComm Best Practices Compliant."
-
This accreditation would become InfoComm's fourth ANSI/ISO accredited certification program (official name to be determined later).
--DIBPA personnel will be provided a personal and numbered stamp to apply to project documents that indicates that the DIBPA has validated the project as being compliant with InfoComm Design and Installation Best Practices.
--Holders of DIBPA certifications will be required to renew their credential every three years via an InfoComm Renewal Unit program.
--InfoComm and sponsoring companies will promote "InfoComm Best Practices Compliant" as the quality mark for the industry.
What this means for the industry is that we are going to self-regulate quality, and we are going to promote those who do so. System integrators and design consultants will be able to market their services as companies that have DIBPAs on staff or on a project team, and that their work will be InfoComm Best Practices Compliant. Manufacturers will be able to rely on the design and integration of their products so that the system it sits within is as capable as their gear. And customers will get systems that are consistently built to industry standards no matter where they are in the world, and these systems will be more reliable because they are designed and installed to industry wide best practices.
There are many steps along the way toward a full rollout in 2012. One of the first is to present this to the industry and get its feedback. To do so we are presenting four webinars that focus on what this program can mean, and how it will work for system integrators, design consultants, manufacturers and technology managers. They are scheduled for:
-
May 25 at 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m. EDT for system integrators
-
May 25 at 3 p.m.-3:45 p.m. EDT for design consultants
-
May 26 at 1 p.m.-1:45 p.m. EDT for manufacturers
-
May 26 at 3 p.m.-3:45 p.m. EDT for technology managers
Independent programmers might want to join the design consultants, independent reps might want to join the manufacturers, and other groups can join in as is appropriate. Register today.

Pacific Media Reports 13 Percent Year Over Year Q1 Projector Growth
According to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on front projectors, the worldwide front projector market grew 13 percent in the first calendar quarter of 2011 from its level in the first quarter of 2010.
PMA divides the front projector industry into three brightness ranges, each associated with its own set of buyer types and applications: New Era (under 500 lumens), Mainstream (500 to 4999 lumens), and High-End (5000 or more lumens). And each of the three experienced very different year/year growth rates during the first quarter, reflecting their relative sizes and ages: the newest and smallest in revenue terms, New Era was up an impressive 95 percent; the oldest and biggest, Mainstream was up only 3 percent; and the intermediate High-End was up 29 percent.
But even though the Mainstream range as a whole grew slowly, there was considerable change in the product mix within it. “The hottest part of this range in recent quarters has been short-throw projectors (including the emerging interactive models), used heavily in education classrooms,” said Dr. William Coggshall, President of Pacific Media Associates. “And within short-throw, it is the ultra short throw range, i.e., projectors with a throw ratio (the screen width divided by the distance between the projector lens and the screen) less than 0.38, that are growing the fastest. The ultra-short-throw segment doubled its share from 2010’s first quarter to 2011’s first quarter.”
PMA also found strong Mainstream growth in the widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) WXGA resolution, as it increased from just under 10 percent to 13.5 percent of the market. “This is a significant change in a mostly slow-changing range,” said Coggshall. “It came at the expense of the more traditional 4:3 aspect ratio SVGA and XGA resolutions. With its greater number of pixels it gives users a better viewing experience, and with its higher prices it benefits manufacturers.”

NEC Launches Green and ADA-Compliant LED-Based LCDs
NEC has finally officially launched its LED-based LCDs in the form of two models - a 46” (X461S) and a 55” (X551S) edge-lit monitor. Designed for 24/7 operation, both are integrated with Intel's Open Pluggable Specification (OPS), which is the first industry-wide standardization in option slots to simplify digital signage.
The OPS option slot allows for easier installation, use and maintenance of digital signage. Using a native 1920x1080 LCD, both monitors offer up a 4000:1 contrast ratio, use less than two watts of power in stand-by mode, can be positioned in landscape or portrait mode, have 10-bit HDMI ports, include closed-captioning decoding and have integrated 5-watt speakers. But one of the most interesting features is the carbon-footprint tracking, which calculates the conservation of green gas emissions.
The X461S and X551S will be available in May and June 2011 at a minimum advertised price of $2,399 and $3,799, respectively, and can be found here (click on “NEW” on the left side of the screen): http://www.necdisplay.com/category/large-screen-displays

Epson Launches (Err, Bad, Ugly) Classroom System
Last month Epson announced the so-called PowerLite Pilot Connection and Control Box, touting it as a “simple, easy-to-use solution that offers extensive control of multimedia (Really? Multimedia? Welcome to 1998.) sources connected to Epson’s wall-mounted short throw and ultra-short throw classroom projectors.” The PowerLite Pilot is designed as an all-in-one solution to compete with systems such as those from Extron and Crestron for control, AV switching and audio for K-12 classrooms.
Although the system does give teachers one place to connect and manage audio and video sources (e.g., computers, DVD players, iPods, etc.) to a projector, the operation and cable management of this is, well, pathetic. Just look at the press photo FROM EPSON for this so-called Pilot.
Epson usually has awesome ideas for products in classrooms, especially its interactive projectors, and we suspect the next generation will fulfill the promises of this first generation product. But, for now, stick with Extron and Crestron.
But, in case you’re just dying to ugly-up a classroom wall with a plastic enclosure that screams 1995, go here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/EdProjectors/Home/BrighterFutures.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes

RGB Spectrum Shows 3G-SDI Switcher
Linx Prime, RGB Spectrum’s new family of CrossXFormat switchers, adds an HD/3G-SDI dual-channel card to the optional video input modules. Video inputs from cameras and production devices using this high-end format are converted for distribution and display on HDMI and DVI devices, which have the advantage of being less costly than HD/3G-SDI monitors. The new card option also offers built-in equalization to support cable runs up to 120 meters at 3.0 GHz or 200 meters at 1.485 GHz. RGB says the HD/3G-SDI dual-channel input cards comply with the SMPTE 292M and 424M standards and support a link rate of up to 3.0 Gbps.

HAI Ships Omni-Bus Lighting Control Network Suite
Designed for the 220-240v/50Hz international marketplace, the DIN Rail style HAI Omni-Bus Lighting Control Network provides hardwired and wireless solutions.
The products are broken down into four segments: core products (required), load control modules, switch interfaces, and accessories. Products are available for control of lighting loads, fans, motors, pumps, and more.
27 new SKUs are available, including two styles of switch interfaces (white and brushed stainless) with wired and wireless options available. HAI switch interfaces may be used to control anything running under a HAI system, including shades, audio, and more. Using HAI's 6-Channel Universal Switch Interface Module, 3rd-party switches can control the Omni-Bus network and anything under the purview of an HAI system.
The HAI Omni-Bus lighting system fully integrates with HAI automation controllers, providing control of Omni-Bus devices using standard HAI interfaces and software applications, including Snap-Link Mobile for iPhone and Android.
HAI says the Omni-Bus lighting products are easy to install: power modules feed power to Omni-Bus devices on the network. Switches, load control and other DIN rail modules connect to the Omni-Bus network using standard Cat5 wiring. Each hardwired switch connects to the Omni-Bus network using Cat5. Omni-Bus communicates with Omni or Lumina home control systems using the Interface Translator DIN Rail Module (the "gateway of the Omni-Bus system”). Programming is accomplished with a software tool using the USB Programming Interface Unit.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are -- we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories -- that's why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I've been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don't think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue - which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe Publications has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in -- we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market (we blow away ANY other Publication in the high-end home AV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009.
