As we enter February, it’s a good time to look back on everything we learned last semester.

Scott Tiner starts us off by sharing a few lessons he and his school learned by having mostly in-person classes with a few remote students. Here’s a hint: Audio is essential! If the remote students can’t hear what the in-person students say during class, it will not provide a great learning experience.

Next up: Kayye’s Krystal Ball! There is a reason everyone loves this article so much every year — and it’s because Gary’s predictions are often right. Nobody could have predicted 2020, however, so we will cut him some slack this year. Check out what he thinks will make big waves over the next year. Exciting, right?

+ Lessons From Semester One [Scott Tiner]

Higher ed just lived through what may be the strangest semester we have ever had. At my school, we held in-person classes, and — knock on wood — we were very successful, with limited numbers of COVID cases and no serious cases. Like many other schools, we employed social distancing, lower limits on people in classrooms and restrictions outside of the classrooms. One of the options we gave students was to not come to campus if they felt safer attending from home. A small percentage of students made that choice. This choice reinforced a critical component of the AV world that others always take for granted — sound.

If you’re a regular reader of my content, you already know this, but for those who don’t, my Kayye’s Krystal Ball piece is an annual article where I not only tell you what I think is going to happen in the AV, UCC and Digital Signage markets for the upcoming year, but I also look back and review the previous year’s predictions — sort of a scorecard of accuracy, if you will. 2020 sucked and surprised us all, so it was more than humbling to start this article by reviewing what I predicted for 2020.
