Before I started as a copywriter at rAVe, I worked in advertising agencies — some big, some small. In all of them, I saw success and I saw failure. In all of them, the most successful employees and accounts in the business always stood out; I believe this is because, among other reasons, the people on these accounts believed in what they were doing with whole hearts and minds — they believed in the clients they worked for (and what those clients stood for). They believed in their advertising agency, what it could do, and how it could genuinely help shape the client’s message.
This reminds me of one of this week’s HomeAV-featured columns by Lee Distad, called “What’s holding you back?” In it, Lee asks us this thought-provoking question, giving us a personal story (and a bit of advice to illuminate the question). Lee writes, “As harsh as it sounds, as a salesperson if you don’t have a deeply rooted belief that your products or services are worthwhile, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.” Lee says, to get better, we need to recognize our weak points and work on them until either they’re no longer weaknesses or, ideally, they become strengths. This is what coaching and self-improvement are all about.
Enjoy the newsletter, #AVtweeps, and don’t miss our other HomeAV updates for this week — including new products and expansions from Control4, Optoma, Bird Home automation, Access Networks and MSE Audio. Also of note: Registration is now open for the CEDIA Awards & Leadership Conference, taking place (for now) July 21-22 at the historic Union League Club of Chicago. The event will “provide CEDIA members with opportunities to network, sharpen their leadership skills, and celebrate the very best home technology integration projects.”
