Welcome to another issue of rAVe ProAV Edition!

Today in my column I evaluate my own predictions from my Kayye's Krystal Ball article, where back in January I made predictions for the commercial AV market for 2009. Read below to see how I think I did, and email me your own thoughts. Check out the original Kayye's Krystal Ball article here: http://www.ravepro.com/issues/2009/01/rpvol7iss1/index.htm#feat1

In industry news, InfoComm has announced a replacement for the seat on the InfoComm Board of Directors left open after the sad passing of Mike Vergauwen a few weeks ago – Jim Ford. Jim is president of Ford Audio-Video Systems in Oklahoma. Congratulations to Jim, and to InfoComm, for what we think is a great choice. Read more details on his selection in our article below.

InfoComm's ICIF has also created a Mike Vergauwen Education Fund to foster educational opportunities in the industry in Mike's memory. Da-Lite has donated the $25,000 they won in the NEC Best of InfoComm contest, and matched it with another $25,000 donation of their own. InfoComm has set an initial target of $100,000. We here at rAVe have pledged $2500 and are putting out a call to everyone in the industry to do the same. Let's all help continue Mike's legacy!

Enjoy the issue!

Six Months Later: Kayye Reviews His 2009 Predictions Mid-Season
By Gary Kayye, CTS

If you’re a regular reader of Sound & Communications magazine and rAVe ProAV Edition, you know that for the past ten years, I’ve been writing an annual predictions article each January for the coming year – what sorts of technological trends can we expect and products will impact the way we do business. [Editor's note: Check out Gary's predictions for 2009 here: http://www.ravepro.com/issues/2009/01/rpvol7iss1/index.htm#feat1]. In addition, for the past ten years, I’ve also reviewed my predictions mid-season just to see where we are compared with where I thought we’d be by the end of 2009.

So, here it is…

The first prediction I made for 2009 was that projectors would become even smaller.  That’s not a tough prediction, obviously, but what I said, specifically, was that we’d see so-called “pico-projectors” (pocket-sized battery operated projectors) jump into the ProAV market – and they have.  In fact, Apple Computer bought thousands of them earlier this year for their field sales reps. We saw at least eight models on the floor at InfoComm.

I went on to tell you that 2009 would finally bring the debut of laser projectors and it did in the form of the, finally shipping, Mitsubishi line.    Although the economy may have slowed down some other company’s R&D in this area, Mitsubishi has established a leadership position with their HomeAV model. We also saw the arrival of a new 8K laser projector from Evans & Sutherland (which was shown at InfoComm), and I still think you’ll see ProAV debuts soon.

Next, I predicted that flat-screen monitors would get even flatter, and flatter they are!  In fact, both Sony and Sharp are shipping screens that are in the range of half-an-inch thick!  They are full-HD 1080p flat-screen LCDs and they look stunning.  Supply is short and they’re pricey, but they are shipping and being installed by ProAV integrators in museums, boardrooms and even private jets every day.

Everyone’s going GREEN and I predicted that this would become a marketing tool of 2009 for virtually every manufacturer.  This one was dead-on.  Every manufacturer has either issued some sort of green-reference, green-product or green success story where they’re saving thousands of dollars on energy expenditures or producing green-like products. There was a ton of green stuff on the InfoComm floor, and I don’t expect that to slow down anytime soon.

Although CloudAV hasn’t caught on yet in the traditional ProAV space, this is how the digital signage word is sending and receiving almost 70 percent of the content they display to all those screens.  Leveraging the network connected to all of them and sending everything from video, stock quotes, ads and news and either streaming it live or sending it in batches to be stored locally and “played” via the screen from a little media player mounted to the back of the LCD is the way all their content is distributed and displayed in HD resolutions.  So, why not use the same model for classrooms, boardrooms and training rooms? Actually, you will.  They were all over InfoComm!

The dumbing down of control systems has been a 3-year trend and 2009 may very well be the climax of that with all the iPhone, hand-held and simple keypad based control systems that have debuted in 2009.  So far, there are more than 25 iPhone control Apps that have turned the phone into a hand-held $200 touch-screen to control everything from AV gear to HVAC systems.  And, don’t forget both Extron (with TouchLink for the Pro market) and Crestron (with Prodigy for the Home market) have launched simpler control systems.

Next I addressed HD-VTC systems and the dominance I expected for 2009.  It’s happening, as companies are not just buying HD-VTC systems for HD conferencing, but for SD too.  In addition, the economy actually provided a boost to this segment of the market as traveling was curbed as a cost-savings move.  Polycom is dominating this trend but some formidable competition will follow by the end of 2009 – but can they even catch up?

Finally, I thought by mid-year, we’d have the rumored Microsoft-buy-out of a major AV manufacturer by now and although I am not privy as to why it hasn’t happened yet, I think it’s got to be related to the downturn of the economic markets.  That’s the only logical reason as this deal was supposedly done in November for the most part.  But, 2009 isn’t over so we’ll see…

Pacific Media Associates Awards Three at InfoComm09

Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on front projectors, has announced their Buckaroo winners for best-of-show products exhibited at InfoComm 2009. The Buckaroo award is named for the pioneering cowboys of the Great Basin country of the American West, which includes portions of California, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon. These cowboys were known for fancy gear that displayed lots of silver ornamentation, so the name is particularly fitting as a recognition of products that produce the best-looking pictures.

The Buckaroo Awards recognize those products in the front projector category that lead the herd by enabling projection of attractive images in a broad range of situations. This year’s winners demonstrated they could satisfy some challenging requirements for viewing due to mobility, installation, and cost-effectiveness considerations.

Reinvigorating the Classic Front Projector Category:  Just when it looked as if Classic (500+ lumens) projector technology advances had all but stopped, Texas Instruments has rolled out some advances that breathe new life into the category. TI wins a Buckaroo for taking advantage of their DLP technology to enable some related technologies that have the potential to both offer important new capabilities to projector companies and open up new market segments for front projectors. These include dramatically broadening the range of uses of 3D, offering possible longer-term savings and ecological benefits of improvements in both LED illumination and improved reflector design for conventional lamps, and expanding the range of customers who can have Crestron control over their projectors. PMA finds their single-projector 3D initiative particularly interesting, as it brings the technology down from the lofty peaks of digital cinema and technical/military simulation to the much broader and cost-sensitive markets of education, business, and the home. LED illumination has already shown up in the earliest of the New Era (sub-500 lumen) projectors and continues to make great strides there, but now it is being put forward by Luminus for the 500+ lumen range, where it will compete with conventional lamps and improved reflector designs from the likes of Wavien. And by embedding a “lite” version of Crestron’s software into the DLP chipset, education and small business customers can have a Crestron control/network solution without having to install a full-blown Crestron control system.

Easy-Mounting Ultra Short-Throw Projectors:  SMART Technologies earns a Buckaroo for their UX60 ultra short-throw projector integrated with the new 685ix widescreen interactive whiteboard. Short-throw projectors have been the hottest new category in Classic projectors, and the UX60 stands out as the first of a new generation of extreme short-throw products. Unlike any other product on the market, the UX60 can be mounted directly onto a wall and the picture adjustments made on the projector itself. In addition to easy mounting, the image emerges from the projector only 40 cm (16 in.) out from the screen, eliminating the shadow problems experienced with longer throw projectors. The UX60 specification ticks all the boxes: easy mounting, WXGA resolution, 16×10 aspect ratio, filter free operation, and DLP high contrast with BrilliantColors.

Pico Screens for Pico Projectors:  A projected image is only as good as the surface that it is projected onto. For battery-powered pico projectors, while that surface of choice in the long run might be a white T-shirt or nearby wall, business folks need something better. When there isn’t a convenient or suitable wall, some form of screen is needed. PMA has seen at least as many attempts at screen designs as at pico projectors, but the best one at InfoComm comes from Japanese giant DNP (Dai Nippon Printing). The inexpensive A4-sized screen is a simple thin, flat, rigid piece of Supernova material that features a fold-out stand on the back, and is available in two versions, high-brightness silver or high-contrast gray.

Congratulations to the winners of the InfoComm 2009 Buckaroo awards!

Integrated Systems Russia Adds Unique Dedicated Halls and Sections

When the third edition of Integrated Systems Russia opens its doors on Tuesday, 8 December, it will be far more than merely another regional tradeshow for the professional AV and electronic systems market. Co-organizers Integrated Systems Events and MidExpo have announced a string of new attractions, all designed to boost attendance, and increase business opportunities for exhibitors and visitors alike.

Among the new attractions will be special pavilions for Russian manufacturers and for conferencing, a greatly enhanced ‘Digital Education’ area featuring real-world room AV solutions, and a ‘ProIntegration Awards’ program for the Russian and CIS markets, to celebrate best practice in regional systems design and integration.

All the new show features will be augmented with specially tailored seminars as part of IS Russia’s enhanced education and conference program, while the ProIntegration Awards will be presented at a ceremony during the show’s Opening Reception on 8 December.

Alyona Burtseva, Project Manager, MidExpo, says, “The ‘Digital School’ zone was one of the most popular areas of last year’s IS Russia, and we are confident that expanding this area is the right thing to do, as we seek to attract more AV buyers from government education departments, regional authorities, and individual establishments than ever before. Alongside this, our new pavilion for collaborative conferencing reflects the continued growth of this sector in Russia and the CIS, despite the economic slowdown.”

A number of logistical changes have also been made to IS Russia as it returns to Moscow’s centrally located Gostiniy Dvor convention centre – home of the inaugural show in 2007. This year’s show will take place over three weekdays to allow greater flexibility for professional visitors, while the dividing line between IS Russia and MidExpo’s co-located tradeshow, Hi-Tech Building, has now been drawn lengthways down the hall to increase ‘cross-pollination’ of attendees between the two events.

AMX, Christie, Crestron, DIS, Extron, Kindermann, Kramer, Mitsubishi, Projecta, Projectiondesign and Tecom are among the show participants. The next Integrated Systems Russia will be held from 8–10 December 2009.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!

For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that's why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I've been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don't think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue – which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe Publications has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.

Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship publication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market.rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA, launched in February, 2004 and is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market.rAVe Rental [and Staging] launched in November 2007.rAVe ED [Education] launched in May 2008.
