Tempest in a Chinese Teapot
This week, we have watched America’s just outrage over Olympic uniforms made in China…
Aw, come on – give me a break.
First, let me agree there is some reason for the outrage. The uniforms look like school uniforms from the Sound of Music. They don’t belong on the awards podium – they belong on a Swiss Miss package.
But the outrage over the uniforms being made in China is as artificial as the material they are made of. As Americans were sitting there in outrage, damning Ralph Lauren and the Olympic Committee for being so un-American, they were, no doubt, wearing Chinese clothes.
Less than 2 percent of clothing worn by Americans is made in this country. A staggering 80 percent is imported from Asia, with the majority of that percentage coming from China. If you have ever bought clothes at Wal-Mart, it is virtually certain that you are wearing something made in China. In a world with so much to be outraged about, this is a tempest in a teapot. It may have been a political mistake (like the berets), but the hypocritical outrage only makes all of us look superficial and stupid. We should all actually start buying “Made in the USA” and paying the price for it, or shut up.
Because according to the numbers, there is nothing MORE American than wearing clothing made in China.
