Digital Azul has strengthened its remote production infrastructure with the addition of the RTS Intercom Systems NOMAD IP wireless intercom system, reinforcing its strategy around distributed, multi-location live workflows. The agreement was signed with RTS through Portuguese reseller Pantalha at ISE 2026, with delivery scheduled for March.

The independent production company delivers live productions across television, film, advertising, sport and events, often connecting multiple remote locations and mobile teams back to its Lisbon-based master control room. Many of these projects take place in environments with limited connectivity but require the same operational reliability as traditional outside broadcast workflows.

“We serve television, film, advertising and events by designing production solutions that remain editorially and technically coherent, even when everything is moving,” said João Tocha, founder of Digital Azul. “That means connecting remote sites, roaming cameras, and mobile crews back to a central control room, without compromising communications. Reliable intercom is fundamental to that model.”

Within Digital Azul’s production architecture, NOMAD functions as a wireless IP intercom layer that extends full intercom access from mobile and remote locations back to the central MCR. The system supports up to 16 intercom channels and integrates directly into the company’s existing RTS infrastructure, allowing crews to maintain consistent communication structures across fixed venues, temporary sites and roaming setups.

The system is designed for use in outdoor and urban environments where crews, cameras and presenters are constantly moving. Digital Azul is deploying flexible antenna configurations and weather-resistant hardware to maintain stable communications across wide and complex locations. Fixed panels at remote positions can be combined with wireless belt packs for mobile teams to align with each production’s operational requirements.

NOMAD’s SMPTE ST 2022-7-compliant IP stream allows intercom signals to travel alongside video and data over public networks, including bonded IP backpack workflows. This enables communications, media and control signals to move together with broadcast-grade resilience, supporting the company’s remote production model.

A recent music launch involved live coverage from two venues across Lisbon, continuous streaming as the artist travelled through the city, and seamless coordination between mobile crews and the control room. These are exactly the scenarios where robust intercom makes the difference.”

Digital Azul, already an RTS Intercom Systems rental partner across Europe, will first deploy the NOMAD system on coverage of the Longines Global Champions Tour. The event represents one of the more demanding international live sports production environments and marks the system’s first live use under the Digital Azul Live banner.
