Innodisk Unveils CXL Add-in Card for PCIe-Based Memory Expansion

Innodisk announced the CXL Add-in Card (AIC), expanding its CXL portfolio with a PCIe-based memory expansion solution designed for next-generation computing and edge deployments.
The CXL AIC connects via a PCIe Gen 5 x8 interface and enables additional memory capacity without occupying system DIMM slots. Designed to address growing memory demands and motherboard scalability limitations, the card delivers up to 32GB/s of bandwidth and supports flexible memory allocation for bandwidth-intensive and latency-sensitive applications.
The add-in card features two onboard DDR5 RDIMM sockets, supporting up to 256GB of memory (128GB x2). By using standard PCIe slots for expansion, the solution preserves native DIMM capacity while allowing system builders to scale memory based on application requirements. Innodisk said the architecture minimizes latency when the CPU accesses shared memory, supporting workloads such as AI inference, edge processing, 5G networking, high-frequency trading and medical imaging.
As a CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory expansion device, the card supports both CXL.mem and CXL.io protocols. This enables memory pooling across multiple hosts and allows dynamic allocation of memory resources to accommodate fluctuating workloads. The company said this approach can reduce system complexity while improving overall utilization efficiency.
The CXL AIC is built in a half-height, half-length form factor and includes an additional full-height bracket for broader chassis compatibility. When paired with Innodisk’s DDR5 RDIMM VLP modules, the compact design is intended to optimize internal layouts in space-constrained edge servers and micro data centers.
Innodisk also said the card is configurable with different RDIMM specifications to meet varied customer requirements. By offering memory expansion without requiring motherboard redesigns, the company positions the CXL AIC as a cost-conscious option for systems facing increasing memory demands.
The CXL Add-in Card is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2026.
