Legrand Shifts Wall Plate Packaging to Compostable NatureFlex Material

Legrand announced it has transitioned the packaging for its standard wall plate portfolio to NatureFlex compostable material, a move the company said will eliminate approximately 117 tons of single-use, fossil-fuel-based plastic annually.
The change applies to all standard wall plate products, excluding the adorne collection, and marks progress toward Legrand’s goal of eliminating 100% of single-use plastic from its packaging by 2030.
The 18-month initiative involved more than 5,000 hours of engineering research, testing and material evaluation. Following validation, Legrand selected NatureFlex, a compostable packaging film derived from renewable cellulose and certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute.
“This shift to NatureFlex packaging represents meaningful progress toward our environmental sustainability goals,” said Ratish Namboothiry, vice president of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, Legrand, North & Central America. “Our teams worked tirelessly to re-engineer packaging that protects the product and reduces its impact on the environment.”
NatureFlex, produced by Futamura, is designed to provide durability for retail environments while offering an end-of-life pathway through industrial composting under appropriate conditions. The material is USDA-certified as bio-based and intended to replace petroleum-based plastic packaging without compromising protective performance.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Legrand on this transformative packaging initiative,” said Yasuo Nagae, President of Futamura. “NatureFlex was designed to help global brands transition away from fossil-fuel-based plastics without compromising performance. Legrand’s commitment demonstrates how responsible material choices can create measurable environmental benefits across an entire product category.”
Legrand said the packaging transition affects one of its highest-volume product lines, delivering environmental impact at scale.
“This project was far more than a packaging redesign, it was a complete rethinking of how we deliver our products responsibly,” added Racheal Rich, Pass & Seymour Sr. Product Manager, Legrand, North & Central America, who oversaw the material evaluation process. “Our goal is to lead the industry with solutions that reduce waste, protect resources, and set new standards for sustainability.”
The updated packaging will begin appearing in retail and distribution channels throughout 2026.
